Dimension 2: CI/CD Pipeline Security

This is where most organizations focus first - and where the most measurable progress happens. Pipeline security covers static analysis (SAST), dependency scanning (SCA), secrets detection, container image scanning, and infrastructure-as-code security scanning.

Key indicators: Percentage of repositories with automated security scanning, mean time from vulnerability detection to developer notification, false positive rate and developer trust in tooling, policy enforcement (do builds actually fail on critical findings?).

Dimension 3: Supply Chain Security

The dimension that has moved from “nice to have” to “board-level concern” since the SolarWinds and Log4Shell incidents. Supply chain security covers software bill of materials (SBOM) generation, dependency provenance verification, image signing, and third-party component risk management.

Key indicators: SBOM generation coverage, use of signed and verified base images, dependency pinning and lock file enforcement, vendor security assessment process for third-party libraries.

Dimension 4: Infrastructure and Cloud Security

Cloud misconfigurations remain the number one cause of data breaches. This dimension assesses how infrastructure is provisioned, configured, and monitored - with a strong emphasis on infrastructure-as-code (IaC) and policy-as-code enforcement.

Key indicators: Percentage of infrastructure managed via IaC, drift detection and remediation frequency, CIS benchmark compliance score, network segmentation and least-privilege IAM enforcement.

Dimension 5: Application Security Testing

Beyond SAST and SCA in the pipeline, this dimension covers the full spectrum of application security testing: dynamic analysis (DAST), interactive analysis (IAST), API security testing, and manual penetration testing cadence.

Key indicators: Percentage of applications covered by DAST, API security testing integration with CI/CD, penetration testing frequency and scope, remediation rate for findings by severity.

Dimension 6: Secrets and Credential Management

Hardcoded secrets remain one of the most common - and most preventable - security failures. This dimension measures how secrets are stored, rotated, accessed, and monitored across development, staging, and production environments.

Key indicators: Use of a centralized secrets manager (Vault, AWS Secrets Manager, GCP Secret Manager), automated secret rotation policies, pre-commit hooks for secrets detection, audit logging for secret access.

Dimension 7: Runtime Security and Monitoring

Security does not end at deployment. Runtime security covers container runtime protection, workload monitoring, anomaly detection, and incident response readiness.

Key indicators: Runtime threat detection tooling (Falco, Sysdig, Aqua), workload network policy enforcement, security event correlation with SIEM, mean time to detect (MTTD) and mean time to respond (MTTR) for security incidents.

Dimension 9: Vulnerability Management and Remediation

Finding vulnerabilities is easy. Fixing them at scale is the hard part. This dimension measures the full lifecycle from discovery to remediation - including triage, prioritization, SLA tracking, and verification.

Key indicators: Vulnerability SLAs by severity (critical: 24h, high: 7d, medium: 30d), percentage of vulnerabilities remediated within SLA, use of exploitability analysis for prioritization (EPSS, KEV catalog), automated verification that remediation was effective.

Dimension 10: Governance and Metrics

The final dimension ties everything together. Security governance covers policy definition, metric collection, reporting cadence, and continuous improvement processes.

Key indicators: Security KPIs tracked and reported to leadership, policy-as-code enforcement (OPA, Kyverno), regular security architecture reviews, post-incident reviews with documented action items.
